- Buy flowers of sufficient maturity and quality
- Look at the quality oF the stems
- Make sure you have the right amount of cut flower food for the size of the bouquet and the vase to be used
- Minimum vase contents is most of the time at least 1 liter!
- Ensure that you use a clean vase which has been thoroughly brushed out and always rinse the vase before use
- Preferably avoid using antique crystal or metallic vase
- Mix the correct amount of water and cut flower food
- Use fresh water directly from the tap
- Remove all leaves which may be in the vase water
- Cut at least 2 cm off the stem, ideally as much as 5 cm
- Use a sharp knife or pruning shears/secateurs, to reduce unnecessary wounds
- Cut at an angle (45 degrees) to reduce stem and damage, and crushing of cells
- Long cuts don't increase the uptake, so don't make the cut too long
- Do not break, cook, split stems, do not use scissors or any other torturing methods
- Do not re-cut daffodil stems just before mixing them with other flowers
- Do not wire or pinch/pierce flowers as this will cause damage and infections
- If flowers upon receipt (gift) are especially deshydrated, place them in a vase with cut flower food in a cool and dark room, preferably without removing the packaging
- Always use a cut flower food for filling vases, preferably fill as much as the bouquet will need for one week
- Do not mix non-clear and clear cut flower food solutions in the same vase
- Changing the water and re-cutting is unnecessary if the cut flower food is dosed correctly
- Avoid exposure of flowers to draughts, direct sunlight, heat, ripening fruits and smoke!
- Check water level daily, ensure stems are in the water
- Top up/refill with fresh water and cut flower food. If the water level is under 1/3 of the initial volume
- Preferably use the same cut flower food. If the speciality is not available any more, use the universal cut flower food
- Never mix old vase water from other vases and buckets with fresh vase water, to avoid rapid contamination with microorganisms and other phytotoxic materials
- Flowers (ex. roses) in mixed bouquets develop less than flowers in mono/straight line bouquets
